Dengue

File:Dengue distr.gif
Also called: Break-bone fever, Dengue fever

Definition
It is an infectious disease caused by a virus. This disease spreads by the bite of a mosquito . It is more common in warm, wet areas of the world. Outbreaks occur in the rainy season.

Symptoms
  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Vomiting
  • Rash
  • Sometimes it turns into dengue hemorrhagic fever (causes bleeding from the nose, gums or under the skin )
  • Sometimes it may turn into dengue shock syndrome (causes heavy bleeding and shock )

Recovery :
Most cases of dengue recover within 2 weeks. Drinking lots of water/fluids, resting and taking fever-reducing medications(except aspirin) might help.

To lower the risk(especially in dengue-prone countries ) :
  • Wear insect repellent
  • Wear clothes that cover your arms, legs and feet
  • Close unscreened doors and windows .
